In collaboration with Rongo University and African Library Project, Kibabii University donated 13,000 books to 13 schools in Bungoma County on Wednesday 22nd September, 2021.
While flagging off the consignment of books, Kibabii University Vice chancellor Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo lauded the project leaders for their efforts in empowering schools and communities in the noble cause. Apart from donating books to schools, the University hosted school librarians, taking them through basic training aimed at imparting knowledge on setting up and running libraries to attract high readership from the school and the community.
In his appeal, the VC urged teachers to make proper use of the books in training learners, assuring them of receiving more books as the Project grew. He expressed his displeasure on the declining reading culture occasioned by the upscaled usage of internet in social media and other forms of entertainment.
“Internet civilization began from the West. While it has contributed to the access to knowledge, it is disheartening to notice that in Africa, the culture of book reading is on the decline because of huge addiction to social media. We must control our addiction to internet and mobile phone usage to avoid losing in the important culture of book reading,” he said.
Some of the schools that benefited from the book donation include; Friends School Pongola, S.A Kabuchai Secondary School, St. Peters Girls Secondary School Mwiruti, St. Mary’s Kibabii, Kibabii Talent Academy, Busakala Friends Secondary School, Namilama Secondary school, Maliki Boys’ High School among others.
